The HTC Desire Z – a Desirable QWERTY

After releasing its first full-QWERTY sliding Android HTC Dream back in June 2009, the Taiwan leader in smartphones now has the second full QWERTY with the HTC Desire Z. Feature-wise, it’s no different from the Desire HD that has sprouted a QWERTY keyboard but when closed, it has more affinity to the earlier Desire in looks and dimensions. In case people ask why designate it a “Z”, one has to look at the sliding mechanism from the side to see a similarity in the formation of its halves and its diagonal hinge forming the letter.

From AMOLED to S-LCD

The HTC Desire Z carries forward the company’s switch from Samsung’s inventory-starved AMOLED to Sony’s Super-LCD screen. Engadget has a good comparison between the two screens on the same HTC Desire and there’s nothing to conclude that one is superior to the other. Both have the same 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen technology with multitouch, a 400 x 800 resolution, 16 million colors and the usual sensors for proximity and accelerometer auto-rotate viewing.

Flagship Features

What adds to the appeal of the HTC Desire Z is its latest Android v2.2 Froyo OS while other Androids using a v2.1 Éclair are stilling awaiting upgrades. But it does step a lower wrung with a Qualcomm MSM7230 clocked 800 MHz when the earlier Desire had a 1 GHz Snapdragon. Other than that, the Desire Z is another upscale Android that has the following:
• Quad band GSM with class 32 GPRS/EDGE on 2G;
• Dual band 3G/UMTS with HSDPA at 14.14 Mbps and HSUPA at 5.7 Mbps data speeds;
• WiFi 802.11 b/g/n with DLNA, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and microUSB v2.0;
• 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, geo tagging, face detection and 720p video recording
• 1.5 GB internal memory with 512 MB RAM and microSD support for up to 32GB;
• 9.8 hours on 2G and 6.6 hours on 3G with 430 hours standby time from a 1300 mAh Li-ion battery.

HTC Desire Brings AMOLED Android Power

There are plenty of great mobile phones out there on the market. But when it comes to overall features, hardware capabilities, accessibility and functionality, it is hard to find a handset that is as impressive as the HTC Desire.

Of course, the Desire is more than just a great, well rounded mobile phone. It does have certain special aspects that make it stand out against other mobile phones.

The Android OS

HTC Leads Windows Phone 7 Race with Mondrian and Mozart

The next generation of Microsoft powered smart phones will be sporting the Windows Phone 7 platform. That being said, it is anyone’s guess who will become the authority when it comes to making Windows Phone 7 devices. With their Mozart and Mondrian line of mobile phones, HTC is the leader of the pack.

The Taiwanese mobile phone maker has left hints regarding the upcoming mobile devices through the XML data which is found within the current HTC specifications. Keen observers have noted that both of these next gen smart phones use the Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile 7 software which is one of the native applications meant for the Windows Phone 7 platform.

Details are few when it comes to the hardware specifications of the duo, but rumors say that the two will have Bluetooth connectivity. They will also be restricted to touch screen input only.

In order to run the Windows Phone 7 platform (and its collection of Xbox Live port games) smoothly, reports say that the HTC Mondrian will sport a powerful 1.3 GHz processor made by Qualcomm. Its touch screen is speculated to be sized at 4.3 inches. Lastly, camera buffs and scrapbooking addicts will benefit from the built in 5 megapixel snapper which is able to shoot high definition video clips.

Although these are not yet confirmed by retailers and no official press release has been circulated yet, there are many instances where rumored specs ring true. If that is the case, the Mondrian looks to be a smart phone to be reckoned with.

Aside from the Mondrian and Mozart phone lines, HTC is also set to release the HTC Gold model this coming November. Looks like the Taiwanese mobile phone manufacturer is after the Christmas season shopping rush.

T-Mobile Announces Lower Price Tag for HTC Desire

When it comes to recommended Android smart phone devices, it is hard to miss out on the HTC Desire. The impressive Taiwan made handset has been the very basis of the Nexus One and is still a great example of how an Android smart phone should be.

In a very generous effort to make the HTC Desire even more accessible, T-Mobile has just announced a new price tag for the mobile phone, turning the Desire into one of the most reasonably priced high end handsets of today.

According to Know Your Mobile, T-Mobile is offering new contracts for the handset. The first is a 20 Pound, 18 month contract that will give subscribers 1GB of data (officially, the website says unlimited internet, but that is subject to the internet fair use policy, hence only 1GB). It reportedly also has 100 minutes of talk time and 100 text messages. This deal will have the handset available for 35 Pounds Sterling.

The second deal will net users the HTC Desire at a slightly higher 50 Pound price tag, but gives users a nice 25 Pound monthly deal that gives 600 minutes of talk time, 500 text messages and once again unlimited internet access that is subject to the fair use rule.

For those who are wondering about the specs on the HTC Desire. This impressive little handset comes with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 5 mega pixel camera and a 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen display and the Google Android 2.1 Éclair operating system. No specific date has been given on when the Froyo update for the HTC handset will be available.

In other HTC related news, several devices from the Taiwan based manufacturer that are UK bound have been leaked. The phones include the HTC Ace, Vision and the Gold. While details on the Ace are minimal, the Gold is said to be the formerly announced WP& Mondrian and the Vision is an Android handset with a slide out keyboard.

Rumor Round Up: New Android Smart Phones from HTC

According to various rumors, there will be two major Android smart phones from Taiwan based phone maker HTC during the coming holiday season.

First on the list is the less believable HTC Sabor. Considering the impressive specs on the handset, it is hard to believe that by the end of the year, HTC would be offering the market a smart phone with a 2GHz CPU and a touch scree display with 1080p HD resolution.

The specs are something out of a smart phone lover’s pipe dream and one that is unlikely to be technologically available in the given time frame –if it does exist, the battery life on the device would be cut extremely short as there are no power-efficient 2GHz CPUs available or in development.

Even Intel has announced that they would not be entering the smart phone industry until 2011, and they have made no claims that they would have a 2GHz CPU either.

The other smart phone is far more believable because of the proposed hardware specs and because it has already been leaked in images. The HTC Vision is a touch screen smart phone that comes with a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and a new high speed CPU clocked at 1.5 GHz. Many HTC Android fans have been hoping for a keyboard loaded device since the Motorola Milestone came out and HTC has yet to answer the call.

A physical keyboard is big deal because it allows users to type plenty of text faster than using a virtual onscreen keyboard. While the feature is not suited for all users, a vast majority of smart phone fans love keyboards –this partially explains why BlackBerry devices are still in demand.

According to rumors, the two handsets will most likely come packed with the new Android 3.0 Gingerbread OS.

Three’s HTC Hero Update Set to Go Live Mid-Late July

Last Monday, HTC has released a new update intended for Hero units running Android 1.5 to upgrade to Android 2.1. Unfortunately, it seems that Orange, T-Mobile UK and Three’s HTC Hero toting customers will have to wait a little while longer to get their Android 2.1 upgrade.

This may be a big letdown for those who are expecting to have their ‘Droid update at the same time as those with unlocked units, but the mobile network operator has assured the press that this is for the benefit of concerned users. To ensure network stability and smooth operations all the way, tests are being conducted using the new update.

The new update is scheduled to be out around “mid to late July” for Three customers. HTC originally planned for all their phone operating system upgrades to happen before the end of the month, but it seems it is just not possible for subscribers.

Although no exact date was given, Three has stated that it would be more likely for the update to happen later instead of sooner.

T-Mobile UK has given a similar statement, saying that everyone will just have to wait for their official announcement. At this rate, a June 30 release date is an optimistic estimate. G2 (their HTC Hero) owners using their service will just have to be a little more patient.

Like the two operators, Orange has been equally vague, saying that the mobile phone upgrade will be live in the “very near future” although no release date estimates were given.

This is truly a big blow for HTC Hero owners, seeing as Google already released version 2.2 of the little green robot, but at least having a delayed update is better than none. Hopefully, network performance will not fail to impress once the update is officially released.

Rumors of New HTC WP7 Handset Emerge

Little is known about the recently announced HTC Mozart. The phone was just spotted in a small announcement by Australian network carrier Telstra which marks the device due for an October release date –right on time for Microsoft’s scheduled launch of the first WP7 handsets.

The news is confusing as it has no mention of HTC’s other WP7 handset, the previously announced Mondrian which is expected to sport some rather impressive hardware. The Mozart looks pretty much like a basic handset which means that it is likely that the phone only sticks the specified minimum hardware requirements given by Microsoft. The HTC Mondrian on the other hand is expected to have a 1.2 GHz CPU and other hardware specifications that will make it one of the most advanced smart phones to be released this year.

The Mozart comes with a basic smart phone form factor –that of a simple touch screen device with a large display and some buttons on the bottom. This makes the Mozart a type-1 chassis according to the standards that have been set by Microsoft.

In other Windows Phone 7 news, it seems that Xbox Live Games will be playing a much larger role in the new mobile platform. There have been reports that all app games for the OS will be going through this system and that the achievements system will be implemented across all games.

While it is confirmed that existing XBL users will be able to access their accounts and their avatars, many believe that the gamer points earned from the console will be counted differently from the ones they earn playing games from this smart phones. As for games, it is expected that WP7 will have plenty of app support (thanks to the early release of the SDK and WP7 handsets being handed out to some developers) despite initial reports that the new OS is hard to program for.

HTC were behind the Google Android flagship phone, the Nexus One, and their HTC Desire handset is equally popular, so many are eager to see what they’ll be able to come up with for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 OS.

Android Update for HTC Desire Confirmed

Nexus One smart phone owners might be enjoying the newest version of the Android operating system, but the HTC Desire is also about to get its update this next month. According to HTC, the new 2.2 Froyo update will be available for downloads by June 23. It is still a little far off, but compared to the XPERIA X10’s September update schedule, this is already early. Regardless of the upgrade there are still plenty of HTC Desire deals still on offer online.

So far, Google has yet to explain why the Desire will not be getting the update anytime earlier but many believe that this might be because they want to encourage sales of the Google Nexus One handset –which has only been recently made available for retail purchase. The handset was originally exclusive only to the Google online store.

Anyway, the Desire is certain to be able to run Froyo without any foreseeable problems, considering that the Nexus One and the Desire share very similar hardware specifications. Both smart phones run on a 1GHz Snapdragon processors, have 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen displays and have 5 mega pixel cameras.

The HTC Desire sports the Sense user interface (which might be a bit too much for some Android purists) but both phones run fast and smooth.

The Froyo update is much anticipated by many Android phone owners because it will bring native Flash 10.1 compatibility to the Android OS. This also means that a lot of online features that are unavailable on Apple products such as the iPad, iPod Touch and the iPhone.

Aside from the addition of Flash support, Froyo will also bring new features such as tethering and WiFi syncing of data –users can easily download content directly into their Android smart phones without having to use any desktop software.

This is major advantage of the Android OS over their iPhone counterparts as Apple requires the use of the iTunes desktop software for transferring content to the iPhone.
